Tenebrae is a Latin word meaning “shadows” or darkness. This service is associated with the Triduum. Its mood is somewhat somber, quiet, and reflective. While psalms are sung and the scriptures are proclaimed, the candles on the altar and the lights of the church are gradually extinguished. This serves as a reminder of our sinfulness, leading to Christ’s suffering and abandonment in His final hours. Yet the darkness of sin does not triumph over Christ, the Light of the World, as we anticipate the hope and promise of His resurrection.
